The School of Resources and Environmental Engineering of Hefei University of Technology is a cradle with a long history, a reputation at home and abroad, and a large number of talents. It began as the Huainan Coal Industry College in 1945, which set up the mining department and geological department. In 1954, Hefei Mining College was established on this basis, and the Department of Geological Construction and Geological Department were established successively. In 1958, the university was reorganized as Hefei University of Technology directly under the Ministry of Education. At that time, the Department of Geology set up six programs including radioactive geology, geophysical exploration, geological survey and exploration, hydrogeology, metal and non-metal geology, and coalfield geology. Later, the coalfield and mining programs were merged into the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1972, the teachers of the coalfield program in the Department of Geology supported the establishment of the Department of Geology in Huainan Coal College. Three undergraduate programs including geological survey and exploration, geophysical exploration, and hydrogeology and engineering geology were retained. In 1987, it was renamed the Department of Resources and Environmental Sciences due to the establishment of the environmental engineering program. In 2000, the undergraduate program of geographic information system was added, and on September 28, 2001, the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering was formally established. In 1998, the Ministry of Education adjusted the professional directory, and the original program of geological survey and exploration and the program of hydrogeology and engineering geology were respectively adjusted to the program of resources exploration engineering and the program of exploration technology engineering. After more than 70 years of development, the school has become one of the main forces and important bases for talent cultivation, scientific research, discipline construction, and social services.
The school currently has 125 faculty members and 110 full-time teachers, including 35 professors, 44 doctoral supervisors (including part-time), and 39 associate professors. The current faculty team is in good condition in terms of professional title structure, educational background structure, age structure, knowledge structure, and academic background structure.
The school has the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees in geology, a postdoctoral research station for geological science, and the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees in environmental science and engineering. It also has the right to confer master's degrees in geological resources and geological engineering, and master's degrees in geography. The school has three provincial key disciplines: mineralogy, petrology, mineral deposit, structural geology, environmental engineering. It has undergraduate majors in resource exploration engineering, exploration technology and engineering, environmental engineering, environmental ecological engineering, groundwater science and engineering, geology, geographic information science, and geo-information science and technology. The discipline and professional system is complete. The school has five departments including the Department of Resource Science and Engineering, the Department of Geological Engineering, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, the Department of Geographic Information Science, and the Department of Ecological Environment, and one lab center. It has the Anhui Provincial Research Center for Mineral Resources and Mine Environmental Engineering Technology, the Anhui Provincial Education Department Key Laboratory for Nano Minerals and Pollution Control, the Anhui Provincial International Joint Research Center for Mineralization Theory and Prospecting Prediction, the Hefei University of Technology-China Geological Survey East China Geological Science and Technology Innovation Center, the Hefei University of Technology-Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences Deep Exploration Key Laboratory, the "111" discipline innovation and talent introduction base for strategic mineral resources mining theory and prospecting prediction (cultivation), and the Hefei University of Technology Deposit Genesis and Exploration Technology Research Center. The school has three national first-class majors in "resource exploration engineering", "geology", and "environmental engineering" and a provincial first-class major in "exploration technology and engineering". The conditions and quality of talent cultivation are constantly improving. More than 10,000 graduates in the field of resource and environmental have been trained, making important contributions to the national and regional economic and social development.
The school has constantly made innovations in the development of disciplines and scientific research. The teachers have undertaken 85% of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the geology ranked ninth in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. In 2020, the discipline of "Earth Science" entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In 2021, the discipline of "Environmental Science/Ecology" entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school has formed major research directions such as mineral fluid system and diagenesis, fracture structure and continental dynamics, orogenic process and orogenic belt dynamics, sedimentology and basin analysis, diagenesis and mineral geochemistry, resource exploration and information, nanomaterials and mineral materials, groundwater dynamics, environmental geological disasters and prevention, environmental evaluation and pollution treatment, and produced a number of high-level teaching and scientific research achievements.
